The National Research University Higher School of Economics (HSE University) was founded during a crucial period in Russia's modern history. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the country required a new generation of economists, policymakers, business leaders, and researchers capable of operating within a modern market economy.
To meet these challenges, HSE was established in 1992 as a higher education institution focused primarily on economics and social sciences. From the beginning, the university adopted international academic standards and emphasized close cooperation with leading universities around the world.

While economics remained one of its strongest fields, HSE began investing heavily in computer science, artificial intelligence, data analytics, mathematics, and digital technologies.
The university also expanded geographically by developing campuses in Saint Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, and Perm. These campuses provide students throughout Russia with access to HSE's academic resources, research opportunities, and internationally recognized degree programs.
In the 2010s, HSE emerged as one of Russia's leaders in innovation and digital education. The university launched numerous English-taught degree programs and significantly increased international student recruitment. New research laboratories and interdisciplinary centers were created to address emerging global challenges in technology, economics, governance, and social development.
Today, HSE University is widely recognized for its contributions to economics, public policy, social sciences, computer science, artificial intelligence, business education, and applied research.
